Rongai Route: Wild, dry, peaceful.
Rongai route is the only route that approaches the Kilimanjaro summit from the north-east side of the mountain near the Kenya boarder. This side of the mountain is characterized by wilder and drier nature.
ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro International AirportUpon arrival, our staff will arrange a private transfer to take you from the airport to your hotel. The drive takes at least an hour. You'll receive a pre-climbing briefing at the hotel.
Day 2: Rongai Gate to Simba CampAfter breakfast at the hotel, we’ll drive to Rongai Gate where you'll enjoy a hot lunch before starting the trek. After registration and other formalities, we’ll begin trekking up Kilimanjaro through agroforestry fields before entering a dense forest where you might spot olive baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, and blue monkeys. The walk will take 3-4 hours, covering 8 km to arrive at Simba Camp (2650m).
Day 3: Simba Camp to Second Cave CampAfter breakfast, we’ll continue trekking up to Second Cave Camp. The trail is gently inclined through moorland and heather vegetation. Upon reaching Second Cave Camp (3150m), a hot lunch will be provided. The trek takes about 3-4 hours. You might also spot wild animals like jackals during the night.
Day 4: Second Cave Camp to Kikelelwa CampThe trek continues, passing through short moorland and heath vegetation to Kikelelwa Camp (3600m). Lunch will be provided at the camp. You might see jackals and small antelopes, and you'll have a clear view of Kibo Peak. Overnight at Kikelelwa Camp.
Day 5: Kikelelwa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn HutToday’s trek leads to Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4330m). The trail is more gradual, with a short incline through grassy slopes, leaving the moorland vegetation behind and entering the alpine desert as we approach Mawenzi Peak. The trek takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, covering 6 km.
Day 6: Mawenzi Tarn Hut to Kibo CampAfter breakfast, the trail leads up gradually through steeper and rockier terrain, leaving Mawenzi Peak behind as we head through the saddle to Kibo Camp (4720m). You’ll be served a hot lunch in the afternoon and spend the rest of your time relaxing in preparation for the night summit.
Day 7: Kibo Hut to Uhuru PeakAt midnight, you’ll be woken up with tea and snacks, ready for the summit. We’ll start trekking up through heavy scree via switchback trails to Gilman’s Point (5685m), where you’ll be served a cup of hot ginger tea to warm up and energize. From there, we’ll continue to Uhuru Peak (5895m) via Stella Point (5762m), taking about 2 more hours. After reaching the summit, we’ll descend quickly back to Kibo for brunch, then continue down to Horombo Hut (3720m). Hot dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.
Day 8: Horombo Hut to Marangu GateAfter breakfast, we’ll start the descent down to Marangu Gate, where you’ll receive a summit diploma and meet our staff, who will drive you back to the hotel.
Day 9: DepartureAfter a restful night at the hotel, it's time for our office to bid you farewell. We’ll arrange your transfer to the airport. If you've booked a safari with us, we'll take you to your safari destination.
